October 05, 2009Read My Latest StoryI love dreaming because I love stories. And dreams are crazy stories created by my own brain to entertain and enlighten me. A few years ago I started writing them down, and then I began interpreting them using Martha Beck's method (as outlined in her book Steering by Starlight), and I've had some cool epiphanies. Some day I hope to take my dreaming to the next level. I'm fascinated by lucid dreaming: becoming self-aware in your dream so you can control it. I've had a little success in becoming lucid--I'm starting to recognize when I'm in a dream, and once I had a conversation with some angels characterized by the extraordinary vividness and clarity of lucid dreams. In the meantime, I'm writing a kid's novel about a boy who teaches himself to wake up in his dreams. Would you like to read some of it? Because you can. Last May I found out that Rebecca Turner of World of Lucid Dreaming was putting together an anthology of stories about this very topic. I took a shot in the dark and emailed her about submitting, and lo, she accepted my story on spec. I had a month to write it before her deadline. Talk about great timing. So I took a break from outlining and making notes for the novel, and wrote this section from the middle of the book, which ended up as "The Same Stupid Dream." It was a great ice-breaker to get a start on the first draft, and it also helped me figure out the voice of the main character, Jerome, a ten-year-old boy plagued by nightmares. The anthology is available as a downloadable e-book for only $7. So you should buy it from here if you're interested in stories about alternate realities. Or if you want a sneak peek at my novel! Enjoy.
